The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center MLK Day parade float won 1st place in the commercial floats division at the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade in Dublin, Georgia. The medical center enters the parade each year to honor Dr. King’s sacrifice in securing civil rights for all Americans. The leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Dr. King worked tirelessly to overturn the segregation that plagued our great nation. On April 4th, 1968, the 39 year old King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, as he was planning a peaceful march on behalf of striking African-American sanitation workers who were seeking equal pay to their white counterparts. CVVAMC Engineering and Recreation staff and other volunteers work hard every year to create a float that honors Dr. King, so receiving this year’s 1st place award was an honor for them and the entire medical center, and they are already looking forward to next year!
